Lesson 1: Equality for All
This lesson begins the unit on analyzing an historic U. S. document.
Later in the unit, we will be reading "A Letter from Birmingham Jail" which was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while he was...you guessed it! In jail! (in Birmingham, of course).
Before we get to the letter (which could arguably be stated to be a document that changed the course of history), we are going to have to get a thorough understanding of the state of the human condition at present.
Take some time and view the video on slide 1 of the lesson.

Slide 3 offers a time table from which to get yourself organized as we get close to the completion of the course.
If you are not spending the time suggested for each of these lessons, you may not be getting the grade you'd like to get.
This is a nice way of saying--"DO NOT CLICK CLICK CLICK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE LESSONS WITHOUT READING!!"
But, I'm sure you have that figured out by now.

Collaboration Project Reminder
Remember! The collaboration project for this course has been changed from what is described in lesson 2.
You can complete the collaboration project at any time during the semester, but you MUST turn in your screen shot of your ten sentences BEFORE you can get to your final exam in the last lesson.
Here is a reminder of the collaboration assignment:
Please DO NOT follow the instructions given for the collaboration project in your course.
The assignment has been changed!!
Instead of doing what the course describes, we will be writing one story as a whole class.
All the students in English and Honors English I A will be required to contribute at least 10 sentences to one on-going story throughout the semester.
So, where do you go to write in your part of the story, you ask??
Please click this link: http://glcaenglish.weebly.com/
This will take you to a website that a few of the GLCA teachers have made.
Once you are there:
click on 'classes'-->English I A-->Collaboration Project
Please read the blog post entitled, 'English/Honors I A Collaboration Project.'
Then take a look at the 'Untitled' blog post.
There you will see the prompt for the story, as well as an image.
The collaboration project is intended to be a semester-long project that the whole class works on. Each student is required to submit a minimum of 10 sentences (maximum of 20) at least ONCE in the semester.
You may contribute up to 20 sentences up to 5 more times for extra credit (+10 each submission).
What to turn in:
1) A screen-shot of your contribution to the story (50 points)
This will be turned into the drop box in Unit 3 Lesson 15
NOTE: You cannot turn in assignments out-of-order, which means that you must turn in your collaboration project when you get to Unit 3 Lesson 15 (and not before).
HOWEVER, please, contribute to the story before you get to the Unit 3 Lesson 15 drop box.
2) TBA (50 points)

Mission: POssible
Through out Unit 3, you'll keep seeing this in a box:
This is what is known as a prompt
A prompt is a topic given to you for a writing assignment.
This is the topic we are supposed to write a thesis paper on for this unit.
However, the essay assignment has been changed!!
In order to give you the best possible learning experience, this course has been adjusted so that you, as a 9th grade student, are going to practice writing a THESIS statement only.
Please use this same assignment prompt, BUT know that you are only going to write one special sentence in response and one paragraph, not a whole 5 paragraph essay.
So keep in mind, as we go through this unit, even though the Connexus lesson says essay, we are only going to be writing a paragraph.
We will be using the same prompt, however!
