Tips for Writing the Unit 3 Narrative Essay
What
is a Narrative Essay? A Narrative Essay will …
–tell a story
–have a beginning, middle, and end
–have a narrator
In this case, you will be telling the story of what happened either before “The Cask of Amontillado” begins (Option #1), or what happened after it ended (Option #2)
You will need to use details from Poe’s story to tie your prequel or sequel to the events in “The Cask of Amontillado”
Your narrator must be someone who would “fit” in the story, such as a mutual friend of Montresor and Fortunato, or a servant.
You will also need to choose a type of narrator:
–Omniscient: all knowing, even aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings
–Limited: only knows what he sees, or what other characters tell him (real life!)
