This lesson is asking you to look at two prominent historical speeches. One speech is the "Four Freedoms" speech by Roosevelt and the other is a speech by President Obama. You may use the Obama speech in the lesson or you may use his famous "Yes We Can" Speech. I have laid out this assignment in the syllabus and I will post it below as well.
The America that Roosevelt is speaking to in his Four Freedoms Speech was very similar to the one Obama was rallying in his Yes We Can speech. Both men were trying to uplift and persuade a downtrodden nation racked with poverty, unemployment, and impending hopelessness. Read both speeches and identify the ways both speakers attempt to capture their audiences. Then, compare and contrast the ways both men inspire hope in a distraught nation.
Your thesis: USE THE FOLLOWING THESIS FOR YOUR PAPER (you can fill in the blanks with items from the list and/or your own observations)
Both Roosevelt and Obama inspire hope in a distraught nation through well-crafted speeches that employ ________, _________, and ___________.
Ways they inspire hope:
· Candidly explain how bad things have gotten
· List ways to change for the better
· Use repetition
· Create phrases that can be held onto by the public
· Clearly states that the United States is a strong nation and will rebound
· Creates faith in themselves as leaders
The speeches can be found both in text and audio form at the following sites:
