The hurdle
This lesson is all about author purpose. While you are reading your novel, think about Steinbeck's reasons for writing this book. Think about the multitude of issues that he discusses through his story. He talks about gender equality (think of Curly's wife), freedom (think about Lennie and George and their working conditions), and more.
This portfolio asks you to pick one human rights issue that you would like to talk about in your future paper, find one quote to support it, and then submit this in a document at the end of the lesson.
I gave you some examples above, but what are human rights? Watch the video below; it's worth it.

Below is a PDF of the Declaration of Human Rights from which you should choose one that Steinbeck talked about in his novel. Following the list is a video presentation of all 30 rights and a description of what is needed for your portfolio.
Portfolio Assignment: What do you turn in?
This lesson talks about a graphic organizer for the book. You do not have to turn this in, but there is a lit chart (very similar) that is all filled out for you as a guide for the book. For that lit chart, click here.
You do need to turn in one paragraph. This paragraph needs to include:
1. the ONE human rights issue you choose to write about in your future paper that Steinbeck talks about
2. a quote from the book showing an example of the ONE human rights issue that you choose
3. an explanation of why you chose the human rights issue you did
