Lesson 4: Pre-Reading
Beginning with this lesson, we will be spending a considerable amount of time learning about reading strategies.
In this lesson, the first thing we will learn about is how to approach reading--meaning what kind of things can we do to open our minds before we read so that we get the most out of the reading.
Recall that the pre-fix 'PRE' means before, so this lesson focuses on things you can do BEFORE you read something to ensure you fully understand what you are reading.
HOWEVER--before you get to the pre-reading strategies, first you must understand a bit about SCIENCE FICTION

Sci-fi is kind of a big deal; many people like it. One reason that many people like sci-fi us that it takes what is possible and turns it into a sort-of reality.
In this lesson, you'll read a magazine article (slide 4) that talks more about this idea of sci-fi and its affect on our reality. To be successful in this lesson, I recommend taking notes on the following:

Reading Strategies: How to Be a Good Reader
There are steps to take before you begin reading, while reading and after you read that will help you understand what you are reading.
The first thing you can do to be a good story reader is to make a prediction about the story based on its title.
ATTENTION!!
On slide 7, you'll be given a link to a graphic organizer. A graphic organizer is a fancy way of saying 'worksheet.'
Remember, there is no such thing as a virtual backpack within your lessons. Virtual backpack is a fancy way of saying "Hey--save this in a file on your computer where you'll be able to find it again because you'll need it later."
You might be surprised to find that you cannot type directly onto the worksheets within your Connexus lessons. You'll need to copy and paste the graphic organizer into a Word document, save it and THEN you can write on it.
Now...getting back to the reading strategies...
Slide 9 gives an informative tutorial on how to read most effectively.

There is a 10 question quiz at the end of this lesson.
