two schools of thought
Slide 3 in the lesson does a decent job of explaining what you should know about why writers write in the way that the do. It's because of a writer's philosophy--or view about life
Please note the drop-down explanation of Naturalism.
Please also note the drop-down explanation of Romanticsm.
These explanations are important because as you respond to the essay prompt for this unit, you'll be answering as to which author wrote using which philosophy. So remember the similarities and difference between naturalism and romanticism.

break it down!
Yeah, so this essay was written over a century ago (1864--the same year the Civil War ended!). You may find it a bit difficult to read, and that's ok! First of all this is written using words and a language structure we don't often see these days (complete sentences, for one). Second of all, the subject matter may be very strange to you! What does this essay even describe? Yes, it's a guy walking around, OUTSIDE, just getting the happiest feelings from doing things like LOOKING at trees and flowers.
Slides 5-10 of the lesson give interactives that walk us through each paragraph making sure we take the time necessary to really absorb what is going on in the essay.
Use them.
I'm not kidding. You are going to need to know what the heck is going on in this essay if you want to get through this unit. Plus, it's just kind of cool to actually read and figure out what you are reading!!

Analyze it!
Now that we know what the essay says (now that we comprehend it) it is time for us to begin to analyze it.
