Lesson 10: Idea development
We are getting close to the end of Unit 1. The theme of Unit 1 has been 'Journey to the Unknown' and we have focused mainly on the science fiction genre.
By reading two science fiction stories, 'The Cold Equations' and a chapter from the novel The War of the Worlds we have practiced reading strategies, including taking notes while reading.
We have also learned about plot structure (a story has a beginning [exposition] a middle [climax] and an end [resolution]).
The other really important things to know about reading literature that we learned were the concepts of conflict (remember? man v. man, man v. self, man v. nature and man v. society), the vocabulary of protagonist and antagonist, and the concept of theme.
WHEW!!
Do you feel smarter now? You should! You've learned a lot in a few short weeks!
Today's lesson continues the exploration of The War of the Worlds.
We are going to compare and contrast two different versions of the same story.

venn diagram
A Venn Diagram is two circles that overlap each other. A Venn diagram is the best and easiest way to visually show how thing are alike and how they are different.
War of the Worlds: Radio version
Read the information and listen to the radio version on slide 4.
What is the same between the chapter excerpt you read in the last lesson and the radio broadcast you heard in this lesson?
What is different?
Create a Venn Diagram showing the similarities and differences.

Assessment: portfolio
There is a Venn Diagram worksheet for you to fill out on slide 4.
NOTE: I have never been able to successfully copy and paste this worksheet into a Word doc. If you can, awesome! If you can't, no worries! There are MANY different ways to complete this assignment. Here are two suggestions:
1) draw your own Venn diagram on paper, fill it out, and upload a picture of your work.
-OR-
2) In a Word doc. make three categories: Radio, Novel, and Same. Under each category, list the things that only the radio version has, only the novel version has and then the things they have in common.
A total of at least THREE items in each category will earn full points.
Upload your assignment into the drop box on slide 7.
Another lesson complete!!

On slide 6 is a reminder of the novel that you will need to read for the class. It is a REQUIREMENT that you chose one from the list. There are ten to chose from.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a novel choice, and can be read entirely online (meaning you do not have to buy the book or borrow it from the library).
Please go to The Boy in the Striped Pajamas page on this website to get started reading.
You'll need to have your novel completely read by the time you get to Unit 2 Lesson 7.
As a heads up, here is the assignment that you'll need to complete and turn in to the drop box in Unit 2 Lesson 10.
