Tone
Don't use that tone of voice with me, young lady!!
That is something I heard from my mom pretty often when I was young and sassy.
Tone in literature means pretty much the same thing.
The tone of a poem, essay, story, song, letter or any form of communication depends on the word choice that the author has made.

Syntax
Syntax is the order of words in a sentence.
Writers can change up the usual syntax for effect.

He's the Star Wars character that is pictured (badly, might I add) on slide 4. He is a well-known character because he talks funny. Yoda uses a different syntax than we all normally do. Observe:

See slide 5 for a good explanation of why syntax is significant. Be sure to note the term: inverted syntax.
You may skip slide 6, which discusses reasons authors chose NOT to use certain words. That seems bit presumptuous, I feel, and so we will not spend time studying it.
