IMPORTANT!! On page 2 of this lesson, in Part B, you are asked to “trace the imagery and language of sickness, disease, and rottenness throughout the play (“Hamlet”). A simple way to do this is to set up a Word document following the form below and to fill in examples as you read.” THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE SUBMITTED IN LESSON 11, BUT YOU SHOULD START IT NOW!
Here is the format I expect for this assignment:
Act I scene II
Hamlet: "tis an unweeded garden / That grows to seed. Things rank and gross in nature"
Analysis: Hamlet is saying that if you (either an individual person, or a nation) do not take care of things (in this case a “garden,” which is used to represent the state of Denmark, and has allusions to the Garden of Eden), they will go to seed, or decay, and become disgusting.
You should have at least 10 examples in your finished portfolio.
Lesson 9 – 2 portfolios
Portfolio A: Instructions on page 2 of the lesson (syntax and language examples from Act I).
Portfolio B: Instructions on page 2 of the lesson (3 separate paragraphs based on prompts).
Lesson 10 – 4 portfolios
Choose 2 from A, B, and C only, and submit a placeholder document to the dropbox for the portfolio you are not completing.
Portfolio A: Instructions on page 2 of the lesson (chart Hamlet’s interactions with characters in Act II, and paraphrase his soliloquy at the end of Act II).
Portfolio B: Instructions on page 2 of the lesson (evaluate the actor’s awareness of audience and delivery, and write a paragraph explaining Hamlet’s attitude toward Horatio, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and Polonius, based on his dialogue in Act III).
Portfolio C: Instructions on page 2 of the lesson (analyze Hamlet’s soliloquy in Act IV scene iv, and compare Ophelia’s dialogue with Claudius, Gertrude, and Laertes to Hamlet’s dialogue and soliloquies, focusing on Ophelia’s and Hamlet’s state of mind).
