Lesson 13: Grammar and vocabulary
WoW!!
We made it to the end of Unit 1!!
In this unit we focused on reading fiction. We read a science fiction story called 'The Cold Equations,' and we read an excerpt of a novel called The War of the Worlds.
Reading strategies were discussed and practiced (remember, it's ok to write in your books! That's what good readers do!).
Important literary concepts such as theme, plot structure, conflict and character were introduced.
Most recently, we learned how to use direct quoting and paraphrasing to support our ideas/opinions. Remember, there are rules to using someone else's words in your own writing!
Can you believe you learned all that??
In today's lesson, the last lesson in the unit, we are going to take some time to brush up on our grammar.
Like Aunt Josephine says, "Grammar is the greatest joy in life." (A Series of Unfortunate Events).

Vocabulary
Remember back... allllllllll they way back to the third lesson in this unit. You were asked to 'rescue' 5 vocab words and put them in your virtual backpack (which we no does NOT exist--it's just a fancy way of saying save for later).
It is now time to get those vocab words out, because you will be quizzed on them in this lesson. Never fear if you've forgotten them or lost then--you can get them from your lesson 3 quiz (pull up your graded quiz from your gradebook--you'll see which words you chose there). The vocabulary words are also given to you on slide 1 of this lesson.

Grammar
Grammar: the rules you are expected to know and abide by.
Until now, I have been pretty lenient about not taking away points for grammatical errors.
That is not necessarily going to be the case in Unit 2.
After we spend some time in this lesson, you'll be expected to write your assignments using these grammar rules. Points may be deducted without specific explanation if I think you are being 'lazy' with your grammar. Points may always be earned back by re-writing the assignment correctly.
Consider yourselves informed!! I really don't think many of you will have too much difficulty with the following:
1) Write complete sentences
2) Avoid run-on sentences
That's really all it boils down to.
There is more information on slides 2-5 in the lesson that you should read and understand. If I were you, I'd take notes on things like: independent/dependent clauses, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, comma splices, and semi-colons.
